How Time Formulas Helped Me Grow Baja Pescador Quickly by Focusing My Efforts Full-Time

Time is a powerful tool—one that, when used effectively, can be the difference between a dream and reality. As I worked to build Baja Pescador, our nonprofit dedicated to ocean conservation and sustainable fishing practices in Baja Mexico, I realized that time was my most valuable asset. The key was learning how to use it wisely and strategically.

Ironically, I turned to some of the simplest formulas to guide my efforts. Formulas I’d learned long ago—related to speed, distance, work, and acceleration—became my unexpected allies in building a company from the ground up. Here’s how these time-tested (pun intended) formulas played a crucial role in my approach and helped us achieve success faster.

1. Time = Distance / Speed: Covering the Ground Faster

When I first started Baja Pescador, I knew I had to cover a lot of ground—literally and figuratively. This wasn’t just about physically reaching the fishing communities of Baja California; it was also about expanding our reach, building partnerships, and spreading our message to a broader audience.

I turned to the basic formula:

Time = Distance / Speed

I realized that to shorten the “time” it would take to achieve our goals, I needed to increase our “speed” without compromising the quality of our work. That meant streamlining operations, automating repetitive tasks, and leveraging technology wherever possible. I optimized our website, implemented efficient processes for communicating with donors, and used digital marketing tools to reach more people in less time. Speed became our competitive edge. By moving swiftly and staying agile, we covered more ground and grew our impact quickly.

2. Time = Work / Rate: Maximizing Productivity

Next, I considered the formula:

Time = Work / Rate

I realized that achieving our vision of ocean conservation would require significant “work”—from organizing events to supporting local fishing communities, from raising awareness to fundraising. But how could we do all this work in a limited amount of time? The answer was to increase our “rate.”

I focused on optimizing our team’s productivity and efficiency. I delegated tasks according to individual strengths, employed automation tools for administrative work, and set clear, measurable goals to keep everyone on track. This approach ensured that every hour invested in the company was used effectively, ultimately allowing us to achieve more in less time.

By raising our “rate,” we were able to tackle more “work” without exhausting our time resources. This meant more outreach, more community involvement, and more significant progress toward our mission of protecting the oceans and supporting sustainable fishing.

3. Time = (Final Velocity - Initial Velocity) / Acceleration: Accelerating the Pace Of Growth

Finally, I looked at the concept of acceleration to understand how to ramp up our growth trajectory. The formula for time when dealing with acceleration is:

Time = (Final Velocity - Initial Velocity) / Acceleration: Accelerating the Pace of Growth

If we viewed our “velocity” as the speed at which we were growing—our impact, donations, community involvement, and partnerships—I realized that to reduce the “time” needed to reach our desired level of impact, we needed to increase our “acceleration.”

I made the conscious decision to go full-time with Baja Pescador. That meant putting all my energy and focus into accelerating every aspect of the business. It wasn’t just about moving quickly; it was about applying consistent, sustained effort that built momentum. I actively sought collaborations with other nonprofits, leveraged my skills in photography and storytelling to create compelling content, and engaged with our audience daily. I pushed myself and our team to think creatively, act boldly, and make decisions faster.

By dedicating myself full-time, I increased our acceleration, moving us from an idea to a fully functioning, impactful nonprofit in a fraction of the time it might have otherwise taken. This acceleration helped us reach our “final velocity” sooner, achieving milestones that once seemed distant and growing our presence in the community far more rapidly.

The Bottom Line: Using Time Wisely

In the end, these simple formulas became guiding principles. By focusing on increasing our speed, maximizing our productivity rate, and accelerating our efforts, we made substantial progress in a short time. Time isn’t just a clock ticking away in the background; it’s a resource we can manipulate, optimize, and harness for growth.

So, if you’re building something new, don’t just think about how much time it will take—think about how you can shorten that time by moving faster, working smarter, and accelerating toward your goals. At Baja Pescador, we’ve learned that time, when used wisely, can turn dreams into reality quicker than you’d ever imagine.
